You can’t pour from an empty cup. Take care of yourself first.
I love this quote. The problem with anxiety is that it is exhausting and can really drain you. That’s why this quote is so relatable. How can you help others when you can’t even help yourself? You can give so away and care so much about others, but you need to care about yourself too.
The next time you find yourself putting you last, just remember, you can’t continue on this route. Spend some time alone if you need to, or do something you enjoy. There’s nothing wrong with that 🙂
Learning to control your anxiety is one of the best ways to feel better within yourself
Anxiety isn’t something that goes away; it’s something you learn to control.
If you have anxiety or depression for that matter, trying to stop it is impossible. But the more you hate having it, the more you try to control it. This isn’t something that you will ever be able to control, unfortunately. I learned the hard way through the large number of panic attacks I’ve been having over the past few years.
So, rather than pretending you don’t have it, or try to get rid of it, remember this quote. Learning to control your anxiety is one of the best ways to feel better within yourself.
Overthinking is the biggest cause of unhappiness
Oh man, is this so true! But it’s something that is harder for a lot of us. This thing about anxiety is that it makes you overthink every instance and issue possible. It makes you worry a lot and creates stress out of small things. So it’s no wonder that it causes unhappiness.
So for you, the main takeaway from this quote is to firstly not beat yourself up about your overthinking. EVERYONE does it at some point in their lives. But, when you actually notice yourself doing it, that’s when you should try and reign it back a bit. Do this by using a distraction like reading or writing. It’ll help you get back on track.
Our anxiety does not come from thinking about the future, but from wanting to control it (Source: Khalil Gibran)
Anxiety makes you want to control every situation possible. You try to eliminate risk by avoiding certain situations or stopping activities completely. You know what? Sometimes anxiety comes with benefits (read about them here). But when you’re trying to control your future, you’re going to cause more anxiety because of it.
So the next time you catch yourself worrying about the future (like money, family issues, paying rent), don’t ignore it, but know what you can and can’t control. There’s no use worrying about things that you literally can’t affect. It only adds to your anxiety and stress. Learning to let go of worries you can’t control is a great way to easing your anxiety.
When you’re trying to control your future, you’re going to cause more anxiety because of it
Be aware of your breathing. Notice how this takes the attention away from your thinking and creates space (Source: Eckhart Tolle)
So I know for some of you, thinking about your breathing can be difficult. Especially when you’re suffering from high anxiety/having a panic attack. But this quote is great for when you find your mind running away with itself. A good time to use this idea is when you’re trying to sleep.
If your mind is whirling around, remember this quote. Focus on your breathing and keeping it steady. It’ll really help calm you down and reduce those thoughts swimming around in your head.
Never apologise for being sensitive or emotional. Let this be a sign that you’ve got a big heart and aren’t afraid to let others see it. Showing your emotions is a sign of strength (Source)
This is something that you really need to remember. So many times I hear my friends or people reading this blog that they don’t want to worry others with their problems. Heck, I am the worst for it! But we laugh all the time. Why shouldn’t express sadness or anger more too?
All of our emotions are valid, no matter what
All of our emotions are valid, no matter what. Taking on other people’s problems is very kind and really does make you a lovely human being. So don’t feel bad when you get upset about something. When something makes you angry, just accept it. Express these feelings and don’t feel bad.
It is wiser to find out that suppose (Source: Mark Twain)
So another really annoying thing about anxiety is that it makes you wonder about everything. As mentioned above, you overthink. But sometimes doing something is better than thinking about it. Think about all of the opportunities you may have missed out on because of your anxiety.
Now I’m not saying that you should give yourself a hard time over this either. But just remember that sometimes finding out what happens is better than wondering. You might not regret it!
