The idea of eating oats soaked in fluid overnight has always seemed a little gross to me. But since oats are one of the best foods not just for your skin, but also for your heart and digestion, when summer started I thought I would give those famous overnight oats a try, even if I have to throw up in my mouth.
I thought: “It can’t be worse than the warm yogurt with sugar my mom used to make for me and my sister when we were kids!”
Now that I’m an adult, I have higher standards and these overnight oats meet all of them. I thought they’d be like rice pudding, which I always from the bottom of my heart hated. But they’re not.
Overnight oats turned out to be the best thing that’s ever happened to me. Might sound super sad, but thery’re the creamiest and most refreshing thing ever. And when I say creamy, I mean really creamy. You would not expect that from oats, because untouched they seem dry and lifeless like my hair.
But the fact is they do contain lots of vitamin E, starches, protein and healthy fatty acids – all of that adds up to creamy.
Oats have a natural sweetness to them and a very subtle aroma that’s quite addictive to me. So addictive that I’ve started eating overnight oats breakfast, lunch and dinner. Whenever I need something sweet and creamy , they’re always there for me and they never judge.
The best thing is: They take only 2 min of my precious time to make and then in the morning – BAM! breakfast is served. There are about a million things I like about this.
I made different kinds of overnight oats, but these are by far my favorite.
I made a vegan/dairy-free version using almond milk, but the pics here are of the not so dairy-free version using yogurt.

The nuts give this whole creamy oat breakfast a nice crunch and the berries add freshness to it.
I sweetened my overnight oats with a little bit of honey. Of course I also added a tbsp of peanut butter, because life is a lot better with peanut butter or any nut butter in it.
Feel free to sweeten yours with maple syrup or agave nectar, or even a banana, if you like those. You can’t do anything wrong here. As long as you put the oats with some liquid in the fridge, it’s all good.
Health and Beauty Benefits
I get chills when I think of all the good things overnight oats do to the human body. They’re good for your skin, heart, digestion and your brain!
Why? Well here’s just the very short version of it:
- Oats and nuts are known to assist weight loss and can lower cholesterol and blood pressure. They have anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory properties as well. On top oats are known to be prebiotic, so they help the good bacteria in your gut grow and thus prevent bad bacteria from overloading the body with toxins.
- Although honey is very sweet and I wouldn’t recommend eating too much of it, 1 spoon is enough to boost your immune system and prevent infections, while not overloading you with sugar.
- Berries are very wonderful and also among the antioxidant-richest foods on Earth. They contain more vitamin C than oranges and thus keep wrinkles away. If you want to know more about the beauty benefits of vitamin C look here.
½ cup oats (old-fashioned), use gluten-free if you’re on a gluten-free diet
½ cup yogurt
1/3 cup water/non-dairy milk
1 tsp honey
1/3 cup sour chrerries/ or mixed berries (I used frozen)
1 Tbsp peanut butter
Nuts (almonds, peanuts, walnuts – whatever you have)
Mix oats, water/non-dairy milk, yogurt and honey in a jar or small Tupperware. Put in the fridge for at least 5 hours (you can eat them earlier as well, but they will not be that creamy).
Take out and top with berries, nuts and nut butter.
Otherwise you can add berries/cherries to the mixture before refrigerating – you’ll save time in the morning.
