Your time is valuable, so you want to get the most out of each minute. And spending two hours on a cardio machine ain’t helping with that.
Cardio is an important aspect of fitness, but that doesn’t mean you need to spend hours doing it. It’s a common myth that you need to spend more time doing cardio, but thankfully HIIT training has shed some light on the effectiveness of short, high intensity workouts. And the busy people of the world let out a collective sigh, as the thought of finding time to do even one full hour of cardio can be stressful sometimes. So why is it a common belief that more is better?
Too much cardio can actually have a negative effect on your health, so it’s important to properly balance cardio with your other training. Here are a few signs that you’re doing too much cardio:
- You can’t seem to shed fat: More cardio = more weight loss, right? Not so much. Too much cardio can decrease your muscle mass, causing your metabolic rate to dip down and your body to hold on to fat rather than lose it.
- Your joints are always sore: Knees bothering you? Hips feel out of whack? Too much cardio puts constant stress on these important joints and can make them weaker.
- You get sick a lot: Your immune system can suffer as a result of too much cardio. Take a step back if you can’t seem to shake those sniffles.
How much cardio is enough?
Depending on the type of cardio you are doing, 30 minutes should be more than enough to help you hit your goals. This, of course, is when cardio is coupled with strength training! Lifting weights is extremely beneficial for weight loss and creating a toned body. And the most effective form of cardio for fat loss is high intensity interval training (HIIT). This can be done on a treadmill, elliptical machine, or stationary bike. All you need to do is pick your interval and pick your rest time. Here are a few examples!
Can’t choose? Some Matrix Fitness treadmills come with a Sprint8 workout program to help you repeat the benefits of HIIT in your own home! Only 20 minutes long, these workouts will work you. They’re on sale through 6/13/2017!!
Now, don’t get carried away with HIIT. This type of exercise is most beneficial when done in shorter periods, so keep your HIIT session to around 30 minutes – in fact, you can even do just 10 minutes of HIIT cardio and see results! Grab a quality cardio machine and really push yourself on the work intervals, earning those rest periods.
