Chiropractors use manual manipulations and natural healing methods to treat maladies in patients. Spinal join misalignments interfere with the nervous system and this results in a lower resistance to illness and disease. Chiropractors can perform manual manipulations and treat patients with exercise, physical therapy, diet and other lifestyle changes.

One of the widest spread misconceptions about chiropractors is that they do not receive the same education as doctors. The idea is that they are untrained and do not have to undergo any special education or training. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Chiropractors have to meet educational requirements to practice. Here is what you need to know about chiropractor training.

Education and Training for Chiropractors

Chiropractors do have to go to school. They graduate from an accredited chiropractic school and while they do not receive an MD or DO, they do have to receive a DC. The DC is a Doctor of Chiropractic degree. Now, you do not necessarily have to have a bachelor’s degree to enter chiropractic school, you do have to complete a bachelor’s program and complete a total of 90 hours of coursework.

The chiropractic program itself takes at least four years to finish. These programs may vary in length, but four years is the average. These classes focus on coursework that is similar to different health careers. Chiropractic care students will have to take courses in anatomy, sciences, physiology, biology and pathology. It is crucial that a chiropractor understands the ins and outs of anatomy. They particularly need to have a strong understanding of the musculoskeletal system.

In order to practice as a chiropractor, physicians have to receive licensing. They have to pass a four-part test. The National Board of Chiropractic Examiners gives this test. After a chiropractor passes this exam, their education does not end. Like most careers in the medical field, chiropractors have to take tests and continue their education to keep the license current. While this is the national standard, some state boards will require additional testing.

Don’t buy into the myth that chiropractors do not have education or training. It is a misconception that they do not have to have any training or education. The truth is that they have to finish schooling and have to meet high education standards just like any other doctor. When you visit the chiropractor, you are visiting someone who has the experience and training to treat your ailments. To schedule your appointment, contact a chiropractor for a consultation.
